Our goal is to help give you the tools to prevent disease by providing oral exams and cancer screenings, routine teeth cleanings, deeper cleanings, fluoride treatment, sealants, as well as oral hygiene instruction.
A dental cleaning is a routine procedure that can take between 30 minutes and an hour, usually twice a year. A deeper cleaning (scaling and root planing) is at times necessary, this is a procedure that could take up to 4 appointments to complete. Following completion of a deeper cleaning, periodontal maintenance cleaning is scheduled for ongoing routine care. These cleanings typically occure 3 to 4 times per year.
Cleaning type is determined by bacteria level, bone loss, and periodontal disease diagnosis. Most patients will fall into the routine cleaning (prophylaxis) category and will see the hygienist twice a year or every six months.
Radiographs (x-rays) and an exam will also be provided at the time of routine cleanings at least once per year. At this time Dr. Thomas will advise you of any issues.
Sealants are a tooth colored resin placed into the grooves of the biting/chewing surface of your molars to prevent the formation of tooth decay.
Fluoride treatment can help those with moderate to high risk of developing tooth decay. In our office, the application of fluoride may be in a gel, foam, or varnish variety. Typically, fluoride is applied with a brush or in a tray that is held in the mouth for about one minute.
After treatment, you will be given instructions where you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes. This gives the fluoride time to absorb and begin to help repairing miscroscopic carious areas.
Dr. Thomas will recommend fluoride treatment based on your oral health status. He may also recommend additional preventative measures if you are at high risk of developing cavities.
